Design Intent

A race car themed nightlight that provides soft lighting for bedtime and doubles as a toy for daytime play.

Design Research

Inspiration

Research into 3 different styles, kids lamps, art deco and funky shapes

Ideation

Further exploration into final design directions, art deco and children’s lamps. Many ideas were explored at this stage.

Low FidelityModels

Once kids lamp concept was chosen, low fidelity models of various designs followed

Focused Sketching

At this point the spiral car lamp idea was chosen. Sketching focused on specific shape as well as mechanism studies to figure out how lamp parts would be stored and operate.

Drawn Render

Final refinement through sketching. Details and color palette begin to develop at this stage.

CAD Model

Experimentation with new tools on Fusion proved helpful in achieving my design. I was able to test mechanisms to activate the light through Fusion. A car was also modeled.

Mid Fidelity Mechanisms

At this stage I was able to fully understand my design. It showed me my original mechanism would be unsuccessful and allowed me to make changes.

High Fidelity Model

At this stage battery cover, snap fits and construction of pieces were refined

Final Renders

Switched to a warmer, more inviting colored light. Placed at childs bedside

Orthographic and Exploded View

Prototype

The final model provides a dim glow perfect for bedtime. The lamp also doubles as a toy for daytime play.

Poster

Poster created for final presentation. Designed to highlight all aspects of the lamp as well as having a strong graphic design elements.
